The Right Way to Claim You’re a Window Cleaning Specialist

November 2, 2009 – 6:55 pm

“Jack of all trades, master of _____ .”

Can you fill in the blank?

“None”

You’ve heard that expression since you were a little kid, and you also happen to believe it. Experience has proved to you that it’s true; that the rule is valid.

Why is it then, that some professional window cleaning business owners have fallen into the trap of claiming to be experts and specialists in everything?

Maybe you have, too.

“Residential, Commercial & Industrial Specialists”

How can that be? How can you be a specialist in everything?

Answer: You can’t.

Maybe it’s because it sounds impressive to the window cleaner who gets the sign made, or maybe because they want to cover all the bases by being the “go to guy” for any and all window cleaning jobs.

The problem is, it doesn’t work that way. The client will just dismiss your claims, and they won’t help you one iota.

So, if you are in the market for some vehicle signage, resist the urge to claim expert status in everything. Instead, choose the area that you are most proficient in, or that you wish to acquire the most clients in, and proudly stake your claim as the resident specialist for that alone.

In the end, it will add credibility, it’s a valuable ‘damaging admission’, and it will attract the kind of client you really want.

A photographic example, to make the point:

My company cleans several high end car dealerships, we care for medium-sized commercial properties regularly, and have handled $30,000 industrial-sized window cleaning jobs, too.

But the company is specifically positioned as a residential specialist.

Do the same, and you’ll attract clients “like bees to _____.”
