How To Make Your Job Hard And Earn More

May 7, 2009 – 2:09 pm

Well, first of all, please accept my apologies for the hiccup with this post.

The entire article was posted yesterday and then the hosting provider I use migrated this site, and with the database being moved, along with it went some of the dynamic content, including this post.

Sorry about that (if you tried to read this article earlier and it didn’t exist!)

Anyway – here’s the point I wanted to share with you that is going to make you more money in 2009: Make your job hard.

A post by marketing expert Seth Godin just reminded me of this same advice that I gave some UK window cleaners a few months back, regarding the message they were putting on a flier: Make your job sound hard.

Yup – hard. At least make it appear difficult, even if you find it easy. People don’t pay big bucks for easy, they pay for difficult, when it comes to services like window cleaning.

Remind them how annoying it is to haul out the ladders and then crawl all over their home with them. Get them thinking about just how tall their windows are, and how much it will hurt if they fall, or how dangerous it will be to be precariously trying to do this work themselves.

And if you’re offering to use your fancy-schmancy WFP setup, then by all means, DO NOT TELL them how easy it will be for you to get it done.

Tell them that although it is extremely difficult and dangerous and pretty much impossible to properly clean those bizarre windows 38 feet up, that thankfully your very expensive, and technologically advanced professional-grade WFP system can manage to do it, with your trained staff member at the helm.

That’s how you make it hard.

And that’s what will allow you to charge $200 for 10 windows, instead of $75.

And it’s what allowed my window cleaning company in Toronto to get away with charging $30,000 for the window cleaning of a complex glass building in downtown Toronto just a couple of years ago.

So start doing it today, too. You’ll thank me for it :)
