How to Use “The Cross-sell” For More Window Cleaning Profits
November 29, 2007 – 9:55 amAll right, back to McDonald’s for another marketing lesson: The effective ‘cross-sell’ offer.
So, you walk up to the McDonald’s cashier, and you say “May I please have a Big Mac?”, and they say…remember?
“Would you like fries with that?”
It is such an ingrained part of the McDonalds marketing method, that we would be shocked NOT to hear it during our next visit, wouldn’t we? They are so committed to the cross-sell that it’s part of their image. And the simple reason they do it is because it works.
It is an established sales and marketing fact that the first sale is the hardest, the second easier, the third easier still, etc. The cross-sell capitalizes on this reality, and does so with maximum efficiency. And thats why, when asked ‘would you like fries with that?’, most of us say ‘yes’.
So, how can you capitalize on this with your window cleaning business.
Easy: The next time you obtain a new window cleaning client, try offering a cross-sell on the spot, whether in person, over the phone, or via email. But again, remember that timing is important. Only after they have committed to at least one service, will the cross-sell work best.
Example:
Client: “Okay, I’d like your Exterior window cleaning service for $129.00, like you just described.”
You: “Great, Mrs _______. Would you like us to clean out our eaves, too, for only $69 more, while our crew is on site? You would normally have to pay $99 for this service, but since we’re there anyway, we can save you some money, and we can look after this important detail for you. With Winter coming, I’m sure you don’t want to take any chances with your eaves being blocked…”
That’s the cross-sell for your window cleaning business. Can you think of a couple more ways that you can use this strategy in your marketing methods? The sooner you start, the sooner your transaction size will increase, and your profits along with it. If you could add $20-$80 to every one of your clients services, would that make a big difference in your monthly income? It would for any window cleaning business owner!
So, start offering the cross-sell today, and pad your pockets a bit more over the next month.
Of course, there are many different creative ways to implement the cross-sell technique, and like most methods, there are wrong ways to do it, too, that can actually end up hurting your bottom line, and harming your business reputation.
